Facebook Gaming Applications and Our Society

So for my final project in another course, we discussed the effects of specific technologies in our society and my group choose Facebook Gaming and created a video to display the uses and the way it’s changing our society. Figured it had a strong correlation of what we learned in this class this term and wanted to just post the video we created up on here.

The movie Alien with Sigourney Weaver

I just watched all the Alien Movies and I never realize how clever the movie was until recently. The word Android was often used and if I watched this 4 years ago the word android would probably draw a blank to my mind. But I really like how they emphasized HI-technology isn’t the best for the human race.  I say that because it seemed to me that the Hi-Tech people were generally the scientists and they were ALWAYS up to no good. It also emphasized that all crew members are “EXPENDABLES” because the government is more concerned with collecting the rare species “Aliens”.

I really thought it was interesting that this movie contained such futurist theme and I feel that some of the tech in the movie is pretty realistic.

Robots.

I saw a video on youtube about android operated robots “Humanoids”.

I couldn’t find the exact video, but this is similar to what I am talking about. These robots looks like a real human, I find it a bit creepy.  If you Google japan robot or just “Humanoids” you’ll probably find that they are using robots as sex toys/sex dolls.

What will this do to our future?

Geode: The iPhone case that can almost do it all…

The average consumer has 3.5 credit cards, while most have more credit cards. According to the company which has created the Geode, they claim that this figure is 2.5 too many cards. The Geode, while it looks like a simple iPhone case, it eliminates the use of credit cards through the advanced technology it uses. It essentially is a place where all of your credit card information, your wellness cards and any other information you have, could be stored without you having to flumox at the register. The Geode lets you input the information of all your cards and select the one which you want to use at the particular moment when you are in line. The ease of the Geode along with its finger-print scanning technology ensures that it is secure and easy to use. As a worst case scenario, even if you happen to lose the Geode, even though access to it is blocked without a matching finger print, you can erase all data on it, never having to worry about things like credit card theft. Below is a great video that showcases exactly how the Geode works.

The future of technology seems to be today. The advancements that are present employ tactics which make life easier for all, so why not enjoy them right now?

Nest: The Learning Thermostat

Most people cannot brag about the thermostat at home, heck, I didn’t even realize that was a topic of conversation. That is, until I watched this video about Nest: The Learning Thermostat. Anyone who hasn’t seen this video or know about Nest should watch it below first.

Watching this video made me realize two things. 1) That the technology around is improving in all ways and methods possible 2) There will always be innovations for all aspects of life. Through understanding this realization while this video played, I was impressed by the simplicity yet elegance through with such a product worked. An analysis of the product’s functionality shows that it is very appealing simply because of the utility that it offers. Products like these are the ones that are constantly pushing the boundaries of technology along and making individuals’ lives easier.

However, this then begs the question as to whether technology has slowly become a tool of functionality to a tool of marketing. Previously, all technological innovations had reason for success because they fulfilled a big need, a gaping hole in society. However, nowadays, we see such obscure innovations and products popping up which necessarily might not really help society, but are bought simply by those who fancy it. Thoughts? Do you think Nest is one of those products?

A Descriptive Camera

Camera’s are of great use in our society, we can capture memories, moments, essentially ‘freeze’ a moment of time to then be able to cherish it. The invention of cameras have clearly played a big role in shaping the social aspects of our society. Well recent technological innovations led researchers to invent the first ‘descriptive camera’. You might wonder what this exactly means, well, as the title states, this camera prints out descriptions of whatever it is that you are printing out.

The descriptive camera works a lot like a regular camera, one just points and shoots to capture an object, image or a scene. However, instead of a colorful image that one might expect, the descriptive camera produces a text description of the scene, image or object.

The technology to make this possible is actually quite complex. It involves the use of Human Intelligence Tasks (HTIs) for workers on the internet to complete. This itself takes a long time, however, the camera can also be placed in an “accomplice mode”. This mode enables for faster results by instant messaging any person about the ‘picture’ you have taken.  While there is some serious technology in use here, this begs the question as to the use of such camera’s in our society. Through research in this class, one common discovery I seem to have made through my blog posts is that currently there are massive research projects being conducted on arcane topics which might not even have a great impact on our society. Is money essentially being used in the right avenues? This seems to be a cause for great concern and something I think (while interesting) it is definitely not a need in our society. Thoughts?

Pinterest.com

I’ve discussed several of the ugly sides of the internet, but it would be an injustice to not publish a post on its beauties.  After presentations yesterday, I decided to check out the Pinterest.com website that we were discussing and I really like it!  It’s simply amazing how the internet allows you to share such creative, fun, affordable and amazing ideas with virtually anyone who has online access!  I was skimming through the crafts and other helpful tips that the site had displayed and was amazed by how creatively people think.  I remember seeing posts on how to make huge, pretty flowers that you can put up on the wall as decoration that was made up of paper, cute recipes that can change something ordinary to something really fun and whimsical (for example, dip chocolate covered strawberries in orange colored chocolate, and they look like little carrots!), helpful fashion tips for bride to be (I understand how this site is predominantly female oriented, a lot of these things are quite girly and most of the comments seem to be by women), amazing handmade artistry made by all types of people (teachers, women, students, etc.),  coupon sites designed and shared by homemakers, and so much more!  This site seems to have just about everything cool!  I think that Pinterest is going to keep me very occupied during the summer break.  I’ve already shared the site with my sister and she’s looking through all their helpful and entertaining posts.  Following this further, this is a great example of how the internet can be utilized for productive purposes instead of functioning as a tool for laziness, as people often turn to the internet for.  Instead of being lazy and watching T.V. during break there are several crafts and recipes that my family and I can try out together thanks to this site.  There’s probably a lot of things that I can use for the family business as well, so I’m really excited to continue exploring (it is my first day on this website after all).

I was also surprised to see that there was even a page for motivational quotes.  In case you are interested in looking at it, here’s the link:  http://pinterest.com/ateenah/inspiring-words/

Most of the quotes are beautiful and they really made me pause and reflect, which is funny because I usually feel as though the internet harms my spirit more than enhance it because a lot of what’s online is so materialistic and empty.  But plenty of these quotes are religiously oriented, writing about God, prayer and having faith, and I was surprised to see that.  Most of them are also accompanied by pictures, which is a plus for anyone interested in photography, artistry, or just wants something visually pretty to look at.

It sounds funny, but this website is making me rethink the internet because I’m realizing more how it can be used really positively if you just access and do the right thing.  It requires discipline no doubt, which each one of us have to learn because it’s all too easy to get lost and harm yourself online.

There a lot of other helpful websites, of course, other than Pinterest.com.  EHow.com is another good example of a helpful website.  And overall, it’s sites like this that put a smile on my face, I hope that they only continue to expand and improve for the better!
