Posted in the Sydney Morning Herald just yesterday, I was very surprised to find out that David Karp, the founder of Tumblr actually lied about his age and experience to gain his following.
At the age of 17, he moved to Tokyo and there he mastered his computing skills and worked on trying to gain as much experience and networking base as possible.
He had to like about his age and his experience when he would talk to people and he would have to make his voice deeper over the phone so that clients or potential business collaborations would not suspect anything.
Tumblr, which was founded in 2007, has been I think one of the most freely creative sites on the internet to date. It was not until I found this article, “Tumblr’s creative force rolls on and on,” that I actually though about how other places like YouTube and Facebook aren’t as freely creative. Karp actually commented on his feelings on YouTube as, “they take our creative works – your film that you poured hours and hours of energy into and they put ads on top of it. They make it as gross an experience to watch your film as possible.”
It is sad to say that I agree with Karp, many of the Youtube videos that I watch now, even from people who have only posted a video or two have an ad attached to them. The article also goes on to explain that it would be better to creatively suggest quality video and film making whereas now it is almost solely seen as get as many fans as possible, make lots of videos as fast as possible and then that way you will get noticed.
It wasn’t until within the past year or so on YouTube that I started to really get annoyed with a lot of the ads that were being placed on the site. I can see now why Karp thinks that Tumblr is more creatively initiated because you very rarely, if ever, see an ad when you post your own videos or pictures up on Tumblr. It is solely 100% pure content. Whether the content is reblogged or original is up to the user.
It is that kind of freedom of expression and creativity that I feel is what people need because it is free of any kind of other forms of advertising. I mean don’t get me wrong, I love advertising and all the things it can and will do but I feel that when you want to express yourself or creatively write something, it should not have to be interrupted by ads and other forms of sale.
The problem I do see with Tumblr being the only freely creative social media site is that it is very hard to use as far as a business is concerned. There is no profitable reason form some people to use it, but then again is profitable reason even a case? As far as keeping Tumblr up and running, yes. But to the aspiring film maker or creatively innovative writer, no. Which is why it will be a constant battle between the social media networks because each one offers and varies in what it will offer and what it will not offer.
But you can see where the creatively lies in Tumblr, starting with a teenager who wanted to build his own business and got exactly that by using his creative thinking skills and determination to get to his ultimate goal. It was a free range of thinking that Karp was using and as you can see when people use that kind of thinking, great things can happen. He is now the founder of one of the most popular and ever-growing social media websites on the internet today and is competing versus other companies such as Facebook and Twitter.
Creative expression can mean different things to different people, to Karp it is complete and total freedom without the interruption of other distracting advertising. Others may only see creativity in just simply being able to post and get their work and thoughts out there, regardless of the interruption that could be happening to their content.
But what I feel truly defines creativity is that it is all up to the author, and anything will be possible.
