Ok, thats probably an exaggeration. But not for the 46% of Republican voters in Mississippi who advocate for this.
A new poll which was set to find out the preferences of Mississippi republicans for the 2012 election revealed that 46% of GOP voters in the state think interracial marriage should be illegal. To put it in perspective that means one out of every two republicans in Mississippi think it should be illegal. Assuming that the state is 50% Republican and 50% Democratic (though it is actually strongly Republican), that would mean that 1 out of 4 people in the state advocate for making interracial marriage illegal. In 2012.
While the sample size for these results is not as big as it ought to be, 400 respondents is still enough to raise a few eyebrows. Still in this survey while 46% would want to make it illegal, 40% would allow this but a whopping 14% said they were unsure whether interracial marriag should be legal. While Mississippi only legalized interracial marriage 45 years ago, it still proves to be a controversial topic. The poll also revealed that Sarah Palin had more support from voters who believed interracial marriage should be illegal than among those who were ok with it.
There was a follow up poll conducted asking Mississippi voters whether they think the right side, the North or the South, won the Civil War. Results are expected for that in a few weeks so keep your eye out!
