So for my final project in another course, we discussed the effects of specific technologies in our society and my group choose Facebook Gaming and created a video to display the uses and the way it’s changing our society. Figured it had a strong correlation of what we learned in this class this term and wanted to just post the video we created up on here.
When our society thinks about Facebook, the majority of us think about a website that we go on to chat with our “friends” or procrastinate. But, the reality of it is that Facebook is a social media utility/platform that allows interconnectivity throughout the world. Although it does have the capabilities for conversing with others, it has expanded itself within the more recent years to allow people to interact in a more in-depth level. One of the more prominent features that has been utilized more recently are the Facebook gaming applications, which provides not only entertainment but also the capability of more social interaction. Facebook gaming has become popular lately because of a number of factors. One of which is being able to interact with friends and family within the games. Another is the cheap, usually free, cost of playing and the quick and immediate gratification of being able to play. Many of these games are simple and easy to get a firm grasp on what the objective is so it’s accessible to a larger section of the general public. For game developers, the economics of this platform is very profitable for them because they receive the bulk of their revenue through advertising even though the cost to the consumer to purchase the games itself is almost nothing. And as the game becomes more popular, the more revenue it generates for the developer. This technology matters because it is a major part of social interaction within Facebook.
So my question is how many of you actually play games on Facebook? and is that one if the reasons you really use Facebook?
Above is the image of the newly created Rimac Concept One. It is one of the greatest advancements in electric engineering to date. With these newer innovations coming forth, the future might no longer need to focus on fossil fuels which in tern help with the massive issue that we’re facing currently global warming.
The biggest turnoff of these electric cars for motor enthusiasts were the performance of the cars themselves. But with this concept it proves that even electric cars can have immense power. This car has over 1,000HP and almost 1,200 pounds of torque ready to be called forth in the simple press of the pedal. It’s top speed is 185mph and goes from 0-62mph in under 3 seconds. It is truly an amazing feat of human ingenuity.
With technology continually moving forward, there’s so many newer innovations and I can truly say I can truly say I cannot wait to see what is coming for us. Is there anything that you guys are anticipating to happen with these technological advancements? Such as more innovative sources of power, a newer type of car, toy, or anything else?
As I was working on my project I found a hilarious video that I feel is why there’s a mass amount of people who fear technology and it’s capabilities. The video was titled “The Printer” and it pretty much describes a printer that goes berserk and devours our universe…. Even though we are humans think that we hold complete and total dominion over these silly inventions.
In our society today there are plenty of people who fear technology, they’re whats known as Luddites. Luddites are people who not only fear technology but completely rejects it. Their fears stem from many reasons, for example fear of automation where the entire human race will be replaced by androids or something like the film terminator. Being ignorant the first thought I had was the Amish societies and how they reject the use of technology but, reality is that they do use technology … sort of. For each of their towns at least one person has a telephone in-case of emergencies, so being curious I looked a little more into what Luddites truly are and was amazed.
There are Luddites all around us today, they’re our countries people in uniform, our teachers, even our friends. They resent technology because of various reasons. But in my honest opinion I feel their resentment comes from ignorance of not understanding the technology itself.
So I was curious, why do you think some people don’t use technology if it’s supposedly so beneficial to us? Is it because they’re scared or just to lazy to learn it or anything else at that?
So I was browsing wired.com and I ran across an article titled “Google+ Refresh: Just Like Facebook…” and I got interested because i’m an avid Facebook and google+ user and I know for a fact that both of their interfaces are similar BUT there are distinct differences. So as I was reading the article it pretty much states google is revamping it’s interface so that it’s more “simpler and less cluttered”. But the reality of it is that it’s to be more interactive LIKE Facebook but after viewing it some more it pretty much is Facebook. It’s adding more “widgets” and games but it’s just another way to copy the whole app craze.
One of the board members of google stated “A Critical piece of this social layer is a design that grows alongside our aspirations”. But by the looks of it currently their aspiration isn’t to become greater, it’s to become more like the booming social network at all call Facebook.
Personally I think it’s ridiculous how they’re trying to become more like Facebook. Sooner or later just as all other social media platforms it will be old news so why not try and innovate what is already out there and become the NEW next thing? Instead they are attempting to gain the edge by copying?
Below are two images of Facebook and Google+ … there are so many similarities now I can’t even figure out why I should be using both platform anymore.
So I was wondering whats all of your opinions on this? Why do you really think Google is attempting to change it’s interface to be more like Facebook instead of innovating it and bringing it to the next level?
When you hear “Wearing technology” people think oh that’s insane how could you ever wear technology! But, it’s more common then people think. I stumbled across an article the other day and it made me take a whole new perspective on wearing tech.
Those images above are just some of the fashion/technology mergers. To think that technology is becoming such a big portion of our every day lives that we’ve incorporated it into one of our main necessities in life CLOTHING! I can’t help but think that maybe we’re becoming a bit too dependent on it and we fear leaving it behind even for a moment. What’s going to be the next thing? Items being implanted into our bodies itself? Not that I’m saying that I don’t think some of those items are unimaginably cool (yes, I am a huge nerd and think those are AWESOME!) but is it really necessary? I was so curious on what some people thought about it I asked several of my friends if they’d be able to even part with some of their everyday items such as phones, computers, etc and it was a unanimous NO! It was like they couldn’t even remember a day in their lives where they just enjoyed the experiences of their day without having to stare at their phone every 30 minutes (if that at all). I can’t take myself out of that group though really because I also find myself staring at my phone for hours on end but, I also take weekly technological cleansing periods to remember that technology is not all powerful and that there is a life beyond it. So I just have to ask, what do you guys think of this “Hi-Tech Fashion”?
Over spring break my friends and I drove to Virginia to hang out and have fun and during this little trip of ours we all though we were having a bit of a mental break. While driving to Virginia in my car we would randomly hear little beeping noises emitted from my speakers at the most oddest moments during our drive and while some of us heard it others did not and it made us begin questioning our sanity. It got to the point where we got out of the car and checked everything from the gas pan to the engine and even removed my chairs from the vehicle itself. Not being able to figure out the source noise we got back in my car and began driving again and for a while we were perfectly fine not hearing anything whatsoever so we though alright we were just imagining things and believe it or not a little bit later it returned! Becoming more and more paranoid we all took a big break at a rest stop and almost immediately everyone who has one took out their smartphone to look up this strange noise… Soon we figured it out, it was a programed hourly memo.
The main point of that little rant above is that with technology there are many benefits, people come up with endless amounts of ideas and ways of implementation. But, when we do know that we’ve truly gone overboard. When you become like my friends and I and think we go insane? We were talking about this for almost an hour straight and we could not think of one simple reason at all why in the world there would be an hourly memo prompt in a car.
In the past when the thought or idea of technology comes to mind we think, innovation, creativity, an easier life style even. But, realistically in more modern times the thought of technology brings only one thing to forward in the minds of creators/inventors of corporate america MONEY! After that huge escapade during the break, I did a little research on this hourly memo and realized it was an add-on feature that was put in my vehicle for an outrageous $35 and I still cannot figure out any use for it whatsoever.
So I must ask, have you guys ever encountered a technology that was supposed to be revolutionary, innovative, and just straight out amazing but, in your eyes you find it unimaginably useless? Because I sure have …..
I can honestly admit I’m a very technologically oriented person, and that with that I am also very avid about it’s uses and production. Maybe because I’ve grown up with technology all my life, or maybe because in technology I find stability and dependability. When I look at technology it is something that is tangible, pure science, the cold hard truth and the outcome of mathematics, physics, and engineering put to action. With technology as long as you continually maintain it properly it will not disappoint, but recently technology is advancing so much and it’s taken one of my favorite hobbies being a grease monkey (person who loves to work on cars in a sense) and it’s slowly turning it from something I love to do on my free time to something I’ve got to research and prepare myself for.
Over this weekend I went home to help my brother work on his new car, and with it came a lot of challenges that normally I would never face when it came to working on automobiles. The so-called “weekend” project I originally came home for has now become a weeklong project. Cars have advanced so much with the technology that goes into them that it makes it difficult to even change the oil in a car anymore let alone installing a complete exhaust.
After this weekend I began to rethink these advances we are moving and striving towards. Although I love technology is it going beyond the grasps of the common people? Will I need to have an engineering degree before I can continue with my passion of working on cars? I feel as though technology IS advancing towards a better and more easier future for us, but what is it really taking away from us?
As we know the two biggest names in the technological computing world are apple and Microsoft and they have been rivals since the beginning. But regardless of their rivalry they have the same goals and missions, to provide user friendly personal computing and move the technological age forward.
I browsing the web earlier and I came across an article that discussed the future of these two companies and how they’re taking different approaches to their singular goal. To understand why these two giants have different approaches you have to understand their past. Until recently Microsoft has always been the dominating force in the computer world with their design, innovations, as well as capabilities and tried to stretch our their reach from not just computers but to other platforms as well such as mobile phones and tablets but had little success . But in recent years apple has gained huge momentum in the technological market with their new revolutionary product the iPhone and iPad. So with these both becoming closer on standings they have different ways to push forward, apple with their mobile and portable outlooks and Microsoft with their reliability and capabilities.
In designing the next new thing both competitors have been working with their strengths and completely pushing the envelope. In attempts to creating the newer and better operating system (OS) they are applying what they know and what they’re good at in each department they want to extend their outreach to, apple has recently announced their new OS Mountain Lion which integrates all of their ideas that were inputed into the iPhone into their new Macs and Microsoft is releasing their new OS Windows 8 which utilizes mobile and tablet capabilities of their touch screens. But here’s a question for you all do you really want your new computer being more like a phone? or your phone being more like a computer?
Mountain Lion vs. Windows 8:
So as I was browsing the internet today I came across a random video that really caught my interest and sparked a question/thought in my mind. Technology is rapidly changing and advancing in our society/world today, but where will it end us? With the rate that technology is changing we have all sorts of reactions from all different types of people. Such as will technology put me out of a job? Will technology help me live longer and give me better benefits in life? Even will technology over run my life and take over! With these advances that we as a society strive for do we ever really think of the consequences that it could really bring to us? How far fetched are these stories and movies that we view on a day to day basis.
From my personal opinion and being an Information Technology major I believe that that maybe one day we will get to the point where Artificial Intelligence (AI) will be capable of computing and processing our needs but never to the extent of over running us and turning our world into a dystopian society. Although we as humans are flawed and none of us are the ideal form of perfection we strive for greatness and that is what drives us to create new technology and better ourselves. As we innovate and create new ideas and physically shape them into form we almost always allow ourselves the backdoor exit to make sure we are ok in the end and we proceed with caution. Even for those times that we find ourselves in a bind that will seem like we are facing the worst of times we continue to push forward to correct our mistakes and advance ourselves a step further. Regardless to what many might believe, there are no advances in life without risk. To come with the new and upcoming we risk many things, security, fortune, as well as life itself so the question is what are you really willing to risk for a better, easier, and even more beneficial lifestyle.
Here below is the link to the video that sparked all of this.
